It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations- something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.

- Katherine Patterson

Introduction

My experience as a MA TESOL student and as an English as a second language teacher helped shape me into the teacher I am today. As a teacher and materials developer, I always search for ways to best facilitate learning, inspire a love for the English language and create meaningful learning experiences for my students. I achieve this in my classroom through the use of authentic reading material and discussions. However, as Katherine Patterson's quote states, it is not simply enough to teach children to read. Students need to be inspired by literature. Literature should help students think critically and creatively about the world and themselves. Therefore, I strive to teach authentic literature in meaningful way that allows my students to achieve these goals. The purpose of this online portfolio is to show my future employers, professors, and colleagues my knowledge, skills and abilities as an EFL literature arts teacher and in TESOL.

This portfolio will showcase my achievements, expertise and best works in both English literature arts education and TESOL. This will be demonstrated in four main sections. The first section will introduce my personal and professional history. The second section will include selected samples of my best work as a teacher and materials developer, including assessments, student work, rubrics and lesson plans. The third section will show my knowledge of curriculum and course development. Finally, the last section will provide an overview of my studies and accomplishments in the MA TESOL program at Sookmyung Women’s University.
